Introducing the Dr. Robert Kirkpatrick Boarding Scholarship
Alexandra College Dublin is delighted to offer a full boarding scholarship to 6th Class students. This Scholarship, spanning from their 1st to 6th Year, includes full tuition and board in our state-of-the-art boarding facilities in the heart of our Campus. Eligible 6th Class students will reside in Ireland, outside of Dublin.
Dr. Robert Kirkpatrick was first and foremost a gifted educator whose passion was History. He was loved and respected by all the students and staff of Alexandra College. We have set up this boarding scholarship in his name to honour his commitment to education and to all the girls and colleagues he inspired over the years. Dr. Kirkpatrick joined the staff in 1973 as a teacher of History. He was Deputy Principal from 1993 to 2001 and introduced the Transition Year Programme to the College, a most progressive move at the time as it was not being offered in many other schools.
He left the College in 2001 to take up the position of History Inspector with the Department of Education and Skills. When he retired from that role, he joined the Council of Alexandra College, the trustees, in 2013 until his death in June 2016, sharing his impressive experience as a teacher, Deputy Principal, and History Inspector with members of Council, for the benefit of the future development of the College.
The Dr. Robert Kirkpatrick Boarding Scholarship is awarded on the basis of means, passion for education, and academic ability; all candidates must sit the Scholarship Exam to be considered. There is no set syllabus for the exam; the standard is that of 6th Class of State Primary Schools. The subjects for the Examination are English and Mathematics. It is the policy of the College not to make available copies of previous examination papers. Please note also that details of results will not be given. The school reserves the right to withhold some or all of the scholarships should a sufficiently high standard not be reached by the entrants in the examination.
Applicants must be at least 12 years of age on 1 January 2023 and under 13 years of age on 1 May 2022. All applicants must be in 6th Class in Primary School or equivalent. Students who have completed all or part of a 1st Year Secondary Course are not eligible to sit for the Scholarship Examination. No exception will be made under any circumstances.
This year’s Scholarship Exam will be held on Saturday 20 November at 10 am. Please note that there is a non-refundable fee for the examination of €100 to be paid on EasyPayments which must accompany the application. The closing date for receipt of applications is Friday 12 November.
