Principal's Update

Principal's Update - 29 May 2026
Barbara Ennis, College Principal

As we reach the final edition of AlexPress for this school year, there is a real sense of gratitude and pride in all that has been achieved across our College community. From classrooms to co-curricular life, from sporting fields to the arts, our students and staff have brought energy, creativity, commitment, and kindness to every aspect of College life.

This issue captures only a glimpse of the richness of the year behind us: academic achievements, leadership, service, sporting success, artistic endeavour, and the many small acts of support and friendship that make Alexandra College such a special community. It also reflects our continuing commitment to opening doors, widening opportunities, and encouraging every student to flourish in her own way.

My sincere thanks go to our editor Sarah Flaherty, and to all who have contributed to AlexPress throughout the year, especially our students, staff, and families who have shared stories, photographs, reflections, and celebrations. This final edition is a testament to the strength of our College community and to the spirit that continues to shape life at the Alex.

I wish every member of the Alexandra College community a peaceful, restorative holiday and a joyful time with family and friends. May the break bring rest, renewal, and inspiration for the year ahead.

Return of Yondr Pouches

All students should have returned their Yondr pouches by this afternoon; if any student has not yet returned their Yondr, they should return it to Reception ASAP. Please note that there is a €25 charge for any unreturned Yondr pouches at the end of the academic year.

Lockers

A reminder that students’ lockers must be completely clean, empty, and left open for inspection by the following dates:

  • 1st, 2nd, and 5th Years: 12 pm on Friday 29 May
  • 3rd Years: 4 pm on Friday 12 June
  • TYs: 4 pm on Friday 22 May
  • 6th Years: 5 pm on Tuesday 23 June

Students should plan to take all their books and belongings home or back to Res over the coming weeks, and ensure that they keep their lock for next year. Students will be assigned a new locker when they return in September.

6th Year Graduation 2026

6th Year Graduation 2026

Our Graduation ceremony earlier this month was a spectacular display of glitz and glam. We were delighted to present the graduates with their class rings and red jumpers by alumna Lucy Nagle as small tokens of their time here that we hope they will cherish for years to come.

Beyond the "glam," this year’s 6th Years have been an outstanding group of young people; their steady attendance right up until the final bell is a testament to their character and dedication. We are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved, and as they move on to their next chapters, we wish them nothing but the very best.

Hermione Student Art Exhibition 2026

Hermione Student Art Exhibition 2026

We were delighted to hold our first ever Hermione Student Art Exhibition, showcasing a wonderful variety of artwork from students across both the Junior and Senior Schools at Alexandra College. Spanning the three levels of the beautiful Hermione Building, the exhibition space worked brilliantly and created a vibrant and exciting atmosphere throughout the building.

Curated and organised by Grace H (4T), with support from Alvina A (4R) and the Art Department, the exhibition celebrated the creativity, skill and individuality of our students. Many of the artworks were for sale, and students got a great kick out of seeing their work sold and appreciated by visitors. We are incredibly proud of our students and of the Art Department in Alexandra College.

Future Leaders of Screen: Screen Careers for TY students led by Lord David Puttnam

Future Leaders of Screen: Screen Careers for TY students led by Lord David Puttnam
Orla O’D, Evanna M, Bree C, and Gracín M – TY

We were one of the 12 schools in Ireland selected to participate in the Future Leaders of Screen: Screen Careers for TY students which was led by Lord David Puttnam. David Puttnam is a British film producer, educator and environmentalist. Two of his most famous films are The Mission and Chariots of Fire. His films have won 10 Oscars, 31 BAFTAs, 13 Golden Globes and nine Emmys.

Throughout the online course we gained an enormous amount of knowledge about all the elements of film-making. We discussed topics such as our identity, our creativity and resilience, storytelling as well as our rights and responsibilities in the world of technology. It was an eye opening experience that emphasised the power of cinema to inspire, to educate and to bring people together.

We were delighted to  meet David Puttnam in person and attend the graduation which took place in UCC on the 11th May. There was a careers panel with Colman Farrell from Screen Ireland, Édaín O' Donnell from West Cork Studios and Tereza Feixova a student from the film and screen media course in UCC they all gave fantastic insights into the world of film.  We are so grateful for our teacher Ms Rycraft who gave us this opportunity to be one of the few schools who got the chance to take part in this course. David's inspirational words will stick with us and inspire us in our future career choices. We will leave you with a quote that was shared with us during the course by Wim Wenders (a German filmmaker and producer).

“Film shapes values, forms habits,

and influences trends of hopes and fears...

Images are the weapons of the future.”

End of Year Service 2026

End of Year Service 2026
Cora M (2S)

On Wednesday 6 May, students from 4th Class to 6th Year and staff in Alexandra College attended our end of year service in Sandford Parish Church. Reverend Gyles led this wonderful service and spoke about the successful year we have had as a community. Throughout the gathering, both staff and students read prayers and readings, as well as Nina C (3S) playing 'Andante' by Friedrich Kahlau on the flute. Transition Year students Katherine P (4T) and Katie D (4T) spoke about all the hard work the Green Schools have put in this year and the amazing achievement of another green flag for the school!

Hannah McAuliffe and Phoebe Boylan in 6th Year read a beautiful poem “Echoes of Yesterday”. We were all reminded of the impact our actions have on the planet when Reverend Gyles spoke about the climate justice candle that is in the parish for the month of May and its importance. Thank you to all who made this service possible. It is a great way to come together as a school community, and we look forward to more of these gatherings in the future.

Leinster School of Music and Drama Excellence Award
Ms Rycraft

Congratulations to Emily M (3H), who was the recipient of the overall Excellence Award from the Leinster School of Music and Drama. The Award and Bursary were presented to Emily by Suzanne Binley from the Leinster School of Music and Drama during a drama special assembly in April.

This is an incredible achievement for someone so young, and we are so delighted for Emily's well-deserved win.

Alexandra College Jazz Band & Rockjam All Stars Collaboration Video Released

Alexandra College Jazz Band & Rockjam All Stars Collaboration Video Released
Mr Rycraft and Mr Cooney

The video from this year’s collaboration between the Alexandra College Jazz Band and the Rockjam All Stars is now available to watch.

This year’s project featured a performance of Suzanne by RAYE, recorded in collaboration with film and television students from Dundalk Institute of Technology.

Watch the video here:

This marks the third consecutive year of collaboration between Alexandra College and Rockjam, with the partnership growing each year through workshops and performances during the Alex Festival of Music.

Using arrangements specially designed for contemporary bands alongside horn and string sections, these projects give students the opportunity to apply their technical musical training in a modern and exciting setting. The collaborations bridge classical, jazz and contemporary music styles, allowing students to experience ensemble performance in a professional and creative environment.

Mr. Rycraft developed the Rockjam All Stars programme to provide exceptional young contemporary musicians with opportunities to work on more advanced and challenging material, while also collaborating with similarly gifted performers and building connections with third-level institutions.

Mr. Cooney’s Jazz Band has become an extraordinary musical institution within Alexandra College and has inspired many other youth music groups, including the Rockjam All Stars. The continued collaboration between the two groups has created something genuinely unique and exciting for the students involved.

With another successful production completed, both Alexandra College and Rockjam are looking forward to expanding the collaboration even further in the coming year.

Musical Performance Social Outreach Concert

Music Performance Social Outreach Concert
Dr Kalnins

The TY Music Performance Social Outreach module students took part in a meaningful visit to Mageough House on 14 May, sharing music with the residents. Their performances were engaging and thoughtfully prepared, showcasing repertoire from Baroque to arrangements of popular music across various instruments and voice.

A warm welcome was received from the audience for the musical talent of Jenna S (4J), Jasmine Z (4Y), Lilian L (4R), Maryam K (4Y), Grace O’B (4J), Cindy W (4R) and Jiewen F (4Y), enhanced by engaging introductions given by Katie D (4T), Muire K (4T), Saoirse J (4T) and Udia C (4T).

For the students, it was a rewarding experience that deepened their appreciation of music performance, collaboration and the positive impact music can have beyond the classroom.
