Hope Concert 2025
On the 20th of November, Alexandra College hosted the annual Hope Concert in aid of The Hope Foundation; an incredible charity that supports street-connected and slum-dwelling children and their families, primarily in Kolkata, India. It provides services such as education, healthcare, child protection, and vocational training to help them escape poverty and gain a brighter future.
The concert was magical due to incredible music and performances from the College jazz band, Junior school choir, the Woodwind Ensemble, Alex Voices, the College Orchestra, Alex Nòs, the Intermediate and College Choir, the Junior Culwick Choral Competition Winners; 2H, the Senior Culwick Competition Winners; the 5th Years and Gracín McDermott, The Geraldine Temple Lang Cup for Senior Singers winner. These outstanding performances showcased the remarkable talent and passion of Alexandra College and captivated the audience from start to finish.
We would like to say thank you to Ms McCoy, Ms Qiao, Mr Cooney, Mr Wilson, Ms Foster, Ms Ross, the entire music department and everyone who helped put this magical night together. We would also like to thank each performer for contributing their time and incredible talent to bring the concert to life. Our last thank you goes to each and everyone who attended the concert and generously donated. Your generosity will make a meaningful impact on the lives of children in Kolkata and words cannot describe our gratitude. We are pleased to announce that we raised €5,690.19. Thank you so much.

Culwick Choral Competition 2025
The annual Culwick Competition for self-trained choirs was a true celebration of singing and community spirit - what a memorable event!
Every choir that took part delivered heartfelt performances, filling the Concourse with energy, creativity, and the unique joy that comes from singing together. Sincere congratulations to each group and every singer for sharing so much talent and passion on stage - this was choral music at its most inspiring and inclusive.
A special round of applause to the overall winners, our 5th Years, who wowed the judges and audience alike with their artistry and teamwork - your achievement is so well deserved! Days like these remind everyone of the power of music to unite, uplift, and inspire us all.
Kindness Week
Our recent Kindness Week, organised by the Alex Acts ambassadors, was a wonderful success! Throughout the week, we witnessed random acts of kindness happening across the school, creating a truly positive atmosphere. It was especially lovely to see these acts celebrated on the screens in the concourse, reminding everyone of the power of simple gestures.
In addition to celebrating kindness, we held bonding events for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th Years, giving students the opportunity to connect across year groups and strengthen friendships.
In the spirit of Bí Cineálta, our new national anti-bullying policy, we encourage both students and staff to carry the sentiment of Kindness Week throughout the rest of the school year. Thank you to everyone who took part and helped make our school a kinder, happier place!

Debating Update
Our Senior debaters secured a unanimous victory in their fixture in the Concern debating competition against St Paul's College, Raheny proposing the motion: 'disinformation is the biggest threat to world peace in 2025.' On 12th November they debated against The High School opposing the motion 'Boycotting is the most effective way to end fast fashion'. While the Junior debaters continued their efforts in the early rounds of the UCD Junior debating competition.
UPenn Exchange - Joan Kearney Scholarship
Last summer, we spent three weeks in a lab at UPenn which is an Ivy League University in Philadelphia thanks to the Joan Kearney Scholarship. We also spent a week and a half in DCU with students from Belvedere College and Friends Select school in America. When we were in America we stayed with families from Friends Select and then we also took students in for two weeks last February.
In UPenn, we did experiments and learned how to follow protocols. We worked in groups of two and had mentors who showed us how to do our project. They gave us a lot of independence and space to learn when we were doing the experiments and we also got to work with mice. We had the opportunity to learn about the research that was ongoing in the lab conducted by leading researchers, and it was amazing to see what they are working on.
During the week in DCU we shadowed Professor Kieran Nolan who gave us insight into his research area. We also got to know the Americans and hear more about the other leg of the trip. The students then came back to Alex for a few days and we showed them around Dublin.
What we really enjoyed about both experiences was that we were integrated with researchers and their work in a real laboratory. We got to be part of the forefront of research and do experiments and analyse the results. We found it very interesting to see how an actual research lab works and this also helped us learn more about what we might like to study in the future. Aside from the research we had truly fantastic host families who made our experiences really enjoyable.
Thanks so much to all the teachers, the lab and the Joan Kearney Scholarship that makes this amazing experience happen.
TY Carlingford Trip
In October, us transition year students and a few of our teachers travelled to Carlingford to stay in the Carlingford adventure centre for three days! Across those three days, we took part in a number of activities including zip lining, kayaking, hiking, paintball, problem solving and more! All of us had so much fun both during the day and at night in our rooms. Since the rooms and groups were decided by our teachers, it was such a great experience for our year and it truly helped us all grow closer. It also helped us students strengthen a number of things like our social skills, critical thinking skills and our team work abilities.I think everyone left feeling very grateful for the luxuries we experience back home whilst also having a sense of appreciation for just how beautiful the Irish countryside is. All the employees at the centre were so friendly and approachable, it was clear that the main thing they wanted was for all of the groups to have fun. My one piece of advice would be to try everything! I wouldn't recommend going to the adventure centre with a set opinion of what you will or won't agree to do. That being said, don't put pressure on yourself to be perfect; the entire point of the trip is for you and your friends to have fun! On behalf of my year, we want to say a special thanks to Ms. Martina, Mr. Manning and all of our other teachers who came with us and made our trip so special!

This month's edition of the Res Round-Up features the opening of our new Library space, a trip to Dublinia, and more!

Transition Year Art Trip to National Print Museum
Transition Year Visual Art students recently enjoyed a visit to the National Print Museum. During the tour, students learned about the development of the printing press and its impact on communication, design, and visual culture. They explored traditional techniques, handled historic equipment, and gained insight into the craft of letterpress printing.
The highlight of the trip was a hands-on workshop where students arranged type and printed their own posters using original printing methods. This practical experience gave them a deeper appreciation of typography, layout, and the skill involved in manual printmaking. It was an engaging and creative day that brought history and art together in a memorable way.
Drama Department News November 2025
A huge well done to all the students from 1st to 5th Year who took their drama and public speaking exams with The Leinster School of Music and Drama from 21st to 24th November. We had eight examiners in with us, and about 220 students were put through their paces.
Thank you so much to the TY Drama Reps who were here on Saturday to help out, giving up their own time. The Reps were absolutely brilliant! Thanks so much to the drama team of teachers who were all here at the weekend, also.
On Tuesday we were treated to two of our 6th Years performing their poems from the upcoming Certificate exams which will take place on 8th December. The focus for the assembly was on parents and those quiet moments of connection that stay with us forever. Siofra Bulfin Brew (6M) spoke her poem ‘My Father Perceived as a Vision of St. Francis’ by Paula Meehan, and Isobel Johnston (6M) gave a recital of ‘When All the Others Were Away at Mass’ by Seamus Heaney. We told the students watching about the recital that the 6th Years are working on for their exam. The Cert exams are a real reflection of their hard work over 6 years of drama, and we love that so many of our drama students keep drama up for 6th Year.
