Kolkata 2026

Kolkata 2026

On Friday the 18th of September, as part of the Hope Foundation Immersion project, 22 6th Years along with Ms Biondi, Ms O’Farrell, Ms Phelan, and Mr LeQuesne travelled to Kolkata, India, famously known as the City of Joy.

Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the Hope representatives who would be accompanying us throughout the week. The Hope Foundation is a registered charity that works to protect street-connected children and their families from lives of pain, abuse and extreme poverty. They operate schools, crèches, after school centres and deliver free healthcare all over the city. Throughout the year, all the girls on the trip had raised funds for the projects that the charity supports so it was incredible to see the actual impact that our donations have made. For example, just €20 would provide education for one child for one month.

During our time here we visited many projects including the Hope hospital, crèches and girls homes. These visits gave us an insight into the incredible work that is done here. Not only do they take care of the children when they’re young but they provide security and opportunities after they turn 18.

Undoubtedly, one of the highlights of the trip was the football match we played with some of the Hope children in a local football club. Despite the lashing rain and muddy conditions (which many a fall proved we weren’t prepared for!) there wasn’t a player on the pitch who wasn’t grinning from ear to ear.

We were guided on a day trip to rural West Bengal, by our Hope representative. We visited an activity centre for children living in the rural villages which was an amazing experience to understand the way of life for people living in rural areas of India, especially those living in poverty. Girls from the centre performed an amazing cultural dance for us and we showed them some Irish dances and songs!

All the girls have certainly felt incredibly inspired by the people we’ve met, and want to continue to spread awareness about the work of the Hope Foundation here in Kolkata. Finally, we want to say a massive thank you to all our teachers who travelled with us, the amazing team working with the Hope Foundation, specifically Gora who looked after us so well, and of course Ms McCoy who spent an endless amount of time making sure this trip was possible for us!

News from the Filmmaking Department

News from the Filmmaking Department

Congratulations to Catherine Cannon from the class of 2026, who has been selected for the Fresh Film HotHouse 2027 line up with her film Wait for it. We are thrilled to hear that two of our current 6th Year students from the Film Society, Bianca Busatto Balthazar and Niamh Carty, will work alongside Catherine on this exciting project.

Fresh Film’s HotHouse is supported and funded by well known partners including RTÉjr, Screen Ireland, and the Arts Council Ireland. This program gives young filmmakers the opportunity to turn their creative ideas into reality, guiding them through every stage of producing a professional short film. Their films are shown on the RTÉ Player in the “Fresh Screens” section and, most notably, they premiere at the prestigious Dublin International Film Festival (DIFF).

TY Spinal Injuries Ireland Visit and Pier-to-Pier Challenge

TY Spinal Injuries Ireland Visit and Pier-to-Pier Challenge
Ms Martina and Ms Phelan

On 14th September, our Transition Year students had the opportunity to welcome Spinal Injuries Ireland to our school. They spoke to students about the important work they do to support people living with spinal cord injuries, as well as the challenges and impact that a spinal injury can have on individuals, their families and communities.

The visit gave our TY students an opportunity to learn more about spinal injuries, accessibility, rehabilitation and the importance of support and awareness. It also helped students gain a greater understanding of how organisations such as Spinal Injuries Ireland support people and families affected by spinal cord injuries.

Following this visit, our TY students will take part in a Pier-to-Pier Challenge on 8th October. The challenge will see students come together to raise both awareness and funds for Spinal Injuries Ireland.

This will be a fantastic opportunity for our students to put what they learned into action, challenge themselves and make a positive contribution to an important cause. We look forward to taking part in the Pier-to-Pier Challenge and supporting Spinal Injuries Ireland in their work.'

Drama Department Update

Drama Department Update
Ms Brehony

Good News

September began with the fantastic news that Roisin Sheehy (Class of 2026) had been awarded third place in the National Excellence Award Competition with The Leinster School of Music and Drama. Alongside Roisin, Francesca Darcy (6J) was Highly Commended in the same competition. Considering that they were nominated from a possible 10,000 candidates examined by LSMD last year, this is a remarkable achievement.

Roisin has just taken up her place with The Lir National Academy of Dramatic Art this year. We are so proud of her and will be following her progress over the next few years.

Co-curricular Classes

All our Speech and Drama and Public Speaking students have now begun their classes and are all beginning to work on their chosen pieces in class. They will take their exams with LSMD on the 21st and 23rd November, so please add the dates to your diary.

Extra-Curricular Programmes

Our extra-curricular programmes are up and running again. Junior and Intermediate DramSoc are on a Monday after school facilitated by Ms. Crowley and Ms. Visocchi. Senior DramSoc will begin after the TY Musical in February.

Our new FilmSoc has also started on a Monday after school and is for TY, 5th and 6th Years and led by Ms. Rycraft.

New Group

This week will see the revival of our Senior Verse Speaking Choir (Thursdays 4 pm). A Verse Speaking Choir is a unique form of ensemble performance in which a group of students brings poetry and prose to life through the collective power of the spoken voice. Rather than singing, students use rhythm, pace, volume, tone, expression and movement, sometimes speaking together and sometimes individually or in smaller groups. The result is a powerful and engaging interpretation of a piece of literature, allowing words to be heard and experienced in a completely different way.

Our Verse Speaking Choir was established approximately 15 years ago and within a few years was tackling some really challenging and dramatic work. After a short hiatus, we are delighted to be getting it up and running again.

Through preparing work for short performances, members of the group will have the opportunity to explore important ideas and emotions while discovering the impact that a shared voice can have on an audience.

Any students from 4th – 6th Year who are interested in joining the choir, please contact Ms. Brehony.
