Each month, we feature a member of our staff in our Staff Spotlight! This month, we spoke to Ninbe Markinez, PE teacher in the Senior School, about her teaching career.

What inspired you to become a teacher?
Growing up in Spain, I always admired the role teachers played in shaping young people’s lives, not just academically, but personally and socially too. I wanted to make a positive difference, helping students discover their potential and build confidence. Teaching felt like the perfect way to inspire, support, and empower the next generation, especially in areas like PE and SPHE where wellbeing and personal growth are at the heart.
What do you enjoy most about teaching at Alex?
I feel incredibly lucky to be part of the Alexandra College community. Honestly, the atmosphere here at Alex is so special. What I love most is the enthusiasm and openness of the girls here. They are eager to learn, to try new things, and to support each other. It’s inspiring to see how they embrace challenges and grow through every activity, both in class and in after-school sports.
What makes teaching PE & SPHE interesting to you?
PE and SPHE give me the chance to focus on the whole student, body, mind, and spirit. It’s not just about sport or physical activity, it’s about helping students understand how to take care of themselves, in every sense. I love teaching the girls about healthy routines, good habits, and how to look after both their physical and mental wellbeing. It’s really rewarding to see them starting to make those connections and take ownership of their own health.
Why did you choose to teach at Alex?
When I moved to Ireland, I wanted to join a school that supports students beyond academics. Alex stood out because of its strong focus on empowering young women and promoting holistic education. I knew it was a place where I could bring my passion for health and wellbeing to life. It’s a place where I can share my passion and also learn so much from the students and staff.
What has been the highlight of your teaching career so far?
So far, the highlight has been seeing how willing the girls are to give everything a go. Even if something is new or challenging, they always try their best, and that’s so inspiring. I’ve also loved seeing so many of them get involved in after-school sports, it shows how much they care, and how much they enjoy what we do in class.
What inspired you to get involved in teaching self-defence?
I believe in empowering young women to feel safe and confident in themselves. Teaching self- defence is about more than physical skills, it’s about building self-esteem, awareness, and the belief that they can protect themselves if needed. It’s an important part of the holistic education I want to offer, and I love seeing the girls gain strength and confidence through it.
How have the girls been doing so far?
They’ve been doing fantastic! I’m so impressed by their energy, their attitude, and how supportive they are of each other. They bring such great spirit to every class, and it makes teaching so enjoyable. I can already see how much progress they’re making, and that’s what makes it all worth it. That makes teaching here a joy and a privilege.
